The Screen Arts degree requirements requires an upper level theory course, which doubles as an upper level writing course need for the Minor in Writing. I took Television Theory, SAC 375, and this paper involves taking a screening from the class and creating an arguement about it using the works of previously read theorists. I chose to wrote about the show Broad City, and how two female showrunners and its origins outside the television industry make it better suited to provide diverse representation to a field where women are critically underrepresented. I included this piece to demonstrate my knowledge of how the production context affects programming. Click above to read. 

Our portfolio requirements require a piece from the English department or a writing from the beginning course in the minor, Writing 220. I chose to my "Why I Write" piece to help give some context about the role writing has played in my life, from the 8 year old entreprenuer to the graduating senior. In this essay, I lay out my motivations for writing and show how the art has always captivated me. This essay also includes a lot about the University of Michigan and how my classes and experiences there have helped to inform my writing. Click above to read. 

One of my favorite classes at Michigan was SAC 325, New Line Cinema. In this class, we explored how New Line had grown from an indie production studio to a conglomerate responsible for the Lord of the Rings films. It was an incredibly useful class in terms of exploring the industry I am hoping to enter. Our final paper assignment involved choosing a New Line film and analyzing in context of the company, and was one of the few academic papers I enjoyed. I chose Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle and analyzed how the film was a departure from the typical stoner genre by featuring two minority characters.
